On October 12, 2006, Pedro Martinez Cutillas sent us a copy of the first edition of his book “Colonial Panama: History and Image”, which he had just published and signed with a touching and endearing handwritten dedication, deeply moving.

Pedro Martinez Cutillas was born with a love for Panama, long before landing on its shores. He arrived from Barcelona, Spain, one day of Easter week, in 1977, convinced that there were aspects of the colonial history of the Isthmus that were yet to be written, that there was a rich history to be divulged, and that was, at the same time a challenge, a debt that he assumed.

Sometimes, life, in one of its rare gestures of generosity, grants us the privilege of crossing paths with truly exceptional individuals. People whose very presence leaves a lasting mark; who do not impose, but inspire; who do not seek the spotlight, yet transform everything they touch. Men and women whose example reminds us what it means to live with purpose, with integrity, with passion. Pedro Martínez Cutillas was, without a doubt, one of those people. One of those who elevate. Who ennoble without trying. Who, simply by being, teach us how to be better.

There are presences that illuminate without raising their voice. And there are absences that, without saying a word, fill everything, the air, the memory, the innermost corners of the soul.
