PEDRO MARTÍNEZ CUTILLAS
Sometimes, life, in one of its rare gestures of generosity, grants us the privilege of crossing paths with truly exceptional individuals. People whose very presence leaves a lasting mark; who do not impose, but inspire; who do not seek the spotlight, yet transform everything they touch. Men and women whose example reminds us what it means to live with purpose, with integrity, with passion. Pedro Martínez Cutillas was, without a doubt, one of those people. One of those who elevate. Who ennoble without trying. Who, simply by being, teach us how to be better.
There are presences that illuminate without raising their voice. And there are absences that, without saying a word, fill everything, the air, the memory, the innermost corners of the soul.
Some lives transcend the ordinary, becoming a reference for future generations. Lives that seem destined to be told and that, upon their fading, leave behind a trail of memories, experiences and lessons that cannot be consigned to oblivion. His was one of those lives—rich in anecdotes, filled with events and memorable milestones. A life worthy of remembrance, admiration and preservation in our collective memory.
After facing a long period of adversity with admirable strength, met with the serene resolve of true fighters, Pedro left us on November 26, 2021, at the age of 90, leaving us bereft of his affection, yet deeply marked by the indelible imprint of his legacy.
A visionary and entrepreneurial spirit, he was an example of intelligence, unwavering perseverance and true foresight. He knew how to stay ahead of his time without ever losing touch with what is essential, always balancing reason with intuition. With a kind demeanor, warm expression, a close tone and a direct and honest gaze, his life was, in essence, a lesson in integrity, passion and generosity.
He understood business not merely as a productive structure but as a true community of people, a space where dreams are shared and wills are interwoven. He firmly believed that every business activity carries a deep social responsibility. And he always knew, without compromise, that dignified, fair, opportunity generating work, is one of the essential pillars upon which a more just and inclusive society is built. He dedicated his life to that ideal, with conviction, passion and the consistency of those who lead by example.
He loved art and every expression of the human spirit capable of conveying beauty, truth and dignity. He saw it not as a luxury, but as a necessity of the soul, as a mirror in which the noblest aspects of humanity find form and meaning.
Few people have tried to live with such fidelity to themselves. Pedro thought deeply, felt authentically and acted with integrity. He did not seek applause, nor did he need approval. He was respected, esteemed and deeply loved because he was genuine. Because his life—simple and resolute—spoke for him, even in silence.
He lived a full life, marked by constant effort, clarity of purpose and an extraordinary ability to accomplish. In everything he undertook, he left behind a trail of achievements and a remarkable testimony of life.
Pedro Martínez Cutillas was born on April 8, 1931, in Jumilla, in the province of Murcia, Spain.
From a very young age, he displayed a remarkable entrepreneurial spirit. At just 16 years old, he founded a tire retreading workshop in his hometown that employed six workers. He used to say, with a touch of irony, that at that age he had already achieved what many take years to accomplish: owning his own business.
Three years later, driven by a desire to explore new horizons, he sold the workshop and moved to Madrid. It was then, propelled by his boundless energy and curiosity for all forms of knowledge, that he took advantage of his voluntary military service to earn certifications as a physical education teacher and parachuting instructor, issued by the Spanish Air Force Academy.
Convinced that riveting was a relic destined to disappear, Pedro dedicated all his time, energy and talent to mastering new welding techniques that were just beginning to make their way into Spain, coming from the United States and other European countries. He didn’t just learn them—he perfected them, promoted them and played a decisive role in their development within our country.
His restless nature, fueled by relentless curiosity and iron determination, soon found fertile ground in which to sow his ambitions for the future.
In his early twenties, he moved to Barcelona with a contract in hand to work on the electrification of the railway line between Mataró and the Catalan capital. That ambitious project required the installation of modern metal towers and demanded the collaboration of highly specialized companies. Pedro joined as a subcontractor to a firm working directly for RENFE.
He was barely in his twenties. He had no capital, no connections, no network. But he had vision, enthusiasm and an unshakeable commitment to quality work. He understood that a project of such scale could not be undertaken alone. So, he sought allies, built teams and inspired others. He knew how to see in others the best parts of himself and made them part of an endeavor that, over time, would grow in scope and significance.
As the years passed, the company born from sparks and steel evolved. What began as a technical and specialized operation gradually expanded into new industrial fields. Soon, it was active in the assembly of equipment for the chemical, petrochemical, hydraulic, automotive and other key sectors of what we now call heavy and semi-heavy industry. This was not random diversification, it was a natural evolution, guided by rigor, necessity and a future focused mindset. Each new area was not just expansion, but a rational, deliberate and necessary achievement.
Pedro quickly realized that technical knowledge alone was not enough. That to lead a company wisely, one also had to master the invisible laws of economics. So, without abandoning his responsibilities, he enrolled in the Faculty of Economics. He balanced his studies with the day-to-day management of his company, a sustained effort only understandable through absolute vocation.
That academic training only confirmed what experience had already taught him, that one of the pillars of business success lies in steering a company toward unique ideas, toward products or services where competition is scarce or nonexistent. If an entrepreneur has such an idea, he would say, the struggle lies in imposing that idea, not in fighting to defend it against others.

“Winning over the customer is the greatest satisfaction in an entrepreneur’s job. Even more than making money. It is the way to know the extent of your success.”
Pedro Martínez Cutillas.
That sustained, patient, and tenacious effort finally found its course in the creation of a business group that Pedro chaired and led with the same enthusiasm with which, since his youth, he had faced every challenge. Española de Montajes Metálicos, S.A. —EMMSA— was, for decades, synonymous with reliability, precision, and commitment. The result of years of rigorous work, it eventually became an undisputed benchmark in the field of “turnkey” industrial installations, backed by more than half a century of activity and by a level of quality and service that earned it recognition both within and beyond our borders.
At the height of its expansion, the group directly employed nearly two thousand people, a figure that tripled when including the subcontracted companies with which it regularly collaborated. Its client portfolio was as extensive as it was selective, including everything from major multinational corporations to leading Spanish companies, all drawn by a reputation built on seriousness, efficiency, and strict adherence to every project. That same record of excellence translated into a business volume exceeding two hundred million euros, consolidating the company among the most prominent players in its sector on an international scale.
Entirely family owned in its structure, and independent from the participation of large economic, financial, or industrial groups, it was able to undertake, with its own resources and proven technical expertise, projects of great scope, complexity, and diversity. Its sphere of activity encompassed every area of construction and industry, stretching from the industrial plains of the Iberian Peninsula to the most unexpected frontiers, the humid jungles of Brazil and the vast expanses of India:
- CIVIL ENGINEERING.
- CHEMICAL.
- PETROCHEMICAL.
- AUTOMOTIVE.
- FOOD.
- PHARMACEUTICAL.
- SEMICONDUCTOR.
- OFF-SHORE PLANTS.
- CONSTRUCTION AND INDUSTRIAL ASSEMBLY.
- NAVAL.
- NATURAL GAS.
- ENERGY.
- INDUSTRIAL GASES.
- ENGINEERING EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURING.
Tireless by vocation and by nature, Pedro was never content with having built one of the most solid industrial groups of his time. His entrepreneurial spirit, always alert to new opportunities, led him to become involved in other fields, such as urban development and tourism. Thus, along the sunlit geography of the Costa Brava, he spearheaded several civil engineering projects that gave rise to the residential developments of Condado de Jaruco, Vinya Rosa and Los Pinares. These forward thinking initiatives, conceived with both rigor and sensitivity, marked a milestone in the evolution of residential tourism on the Spanish coast, blending architectural vision with respect for the environment.
Awarded an honorary doctorate by Johnson and Wales University (Providence, U.S.A.), Pedro was a member of various business and cultural associations and his distinguished career earned him multiple accolades across Europe, the United States and Latin America, testimony to a life devoted to work, creation and strategic thinking.
Beyond his intense professional activity, Pedro nurtured a deep and ongoing relationship with art and history. He was an avid collector and, above all, a generous patron. He supported young artists, encouraged their first steps, believed in them long before they were recognized, and with his support, helped many to establish lasting careers. His patronage was not a secondary gesture, but rather another form, perhaps the most intimate, of building the future.
Likewise, his passion for history led him to pursue university studies in the field at the Faculty of Geography and History at the University of Barcelona.
A passionate scholar and deeply enamored of Panama, for more than thirty years he focused his attention on the country’s history, delving into its culture and promoting significant historiographical research, both at the Archivo de Indias and in various national and international archives.
Part of this research came to light through the publication of his works “Panamá Colonial: Historia e Imagen” (2006) and “Veragua en el siglo XVI: Historia e Imagen” (2010), on the occasion of the fifth centenary of Christopher Columbus’s death. All copies, published without commercial intent, were donated and distributed to libraries, universities and cultural institutions around the world.
In recognition of his notable achievements, the Government of the Republic of Panama, through its executive branch and in the person of its President, His Excellency Martín Torrijos Espino, Head of State and Government, awarded him, on March 1, 2007, the National Order of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, at the rank of Commander. This distinction, the highest honor granted by the Panamanian State, recognizes those who have made exemplary contributions to the progress and greatness of the nation.
The solemn investiture ceremony was presided over by His Excellency Samuel Lewis Navarro, First Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic and by Dr. Arístides Royo Sánchez, former President of Panama and then Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS).
The event was also graced by the presence of His Excellency Gerardo Zaldívar Miquelarena, Ambassador of Spain to Panama and His Most Reverend Eminence José Dimas Cedeño, Metropolitan Archbishop of Panama.
The Ministry of Labor and Workforce Development of the Republic of Panama honored his career with a public tribute, naming him honorary collaborator and consultant of the Ministry, as well as Emeritus Mediator in the cause of dialogue and understanding between the people of Panama and the world. In turn, the Municipality of Panama City granted him the title of Illustrious Visitor, as a token of gratitude and respect.
A year later, on April 9, 2008, in recognition of his invaluable contributions to national historiography, he was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa in a distinguished ceremony held in the University Auditorium (Paraninfo Universitario). The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including the Second Vice President of the Republic, Rubén Arosemena, members of the diplomatic corps, the Council of Rectors, historians, intellectuals and other figures from the academic and cultural spheres.
“It is a profound honor. This academic distinction fills me with pride”, he expressed with emotion during his address, after receiving the award from His Excellency and Magnificent Rector of the University of Panama, Gustavo García de Paredes, who acted on behalf of the university’s academic leadership and community.
Aware of the moment’s significance, the Rector emphasized that in the institution’s seventy two year history, the honorary doctorate had only been conferred on twelve individuals, both national and international, underscoring the exceptional nature of this tribute.
In referring to Pedro Martínez Cutillas, he described him, with firmness and admiration, as “a true humanist in every sense” and praised his calm demeanor, insatiable thirst for knowledge, intuitive brilliance and deep love for art, learning and history.
“For one month a year, between 1544 and 1739, the panamanian isthmus became the economic center of the empire, like a Wall Street of the time, where two-thirds of the silver produced in the spanish possessions of the New World for their exchange in terms of goods that were shipped from Seville in the galleons of Tierra Firme,” said Pedro Martínez Cutillas, in his applauded investiture speech, titled “Panama in the First Globalization of the World Economy”.
On May 22, 2009, honored with the highest distinction that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Panama can bestow upon a foreign citizen, he was appointed Honorary Consul of Panama to the Kingdom of Spain. With this appointment, he formally joined the Diplomatic and Consular Corps accredited in Spanish territory, tasked with promoting and strengthening the economic, cultural and scientific ties between the two nations.
Some time later, driven by a deep conviction in the need to contribute lasting values to society and guided, as always, by the discretion and humility that defined him, on July 12, 2012, he founded the Pedro Martínez Cutillas Foundation. Its mission: to expand, rethink and enrich the cultural fabric and to promote education and the arts through activities centered on research, outreach and training. To that end, he permanently allocated his own personal assets, dedicating them entirely to the pursuit of objectives of general public interest.

It is always difficult to pay tribute to a loved one without emotion clouding the fair measure of their merits. But in Pedro’s case, affection does not stand in the way of objectivity—his full life, his remarkable achievements and above all, his human stature, so unique and so deeply endearing—are confirmation enough.
Pedro was a cultivated man, shrewd, hardworking to the point of exhaustion and at the same time kind, approachable, generous with his time and his words. To converse with him was a privilege—because of his clarity, his wit and the bright outlook with which he approached life. He made all of us who had the fortune to walk alongside him better. Better as people, better in how we moved through the world. He taught us without trying to teach, through the simple act of being.
His self taught, enthusiastic and brilliant nature made him, in the heart of our family, a guiding figure. For the quiet strength with which he faced every challenge, for the vitality that animated him, for his humility and the strength of his convictions. And so, his absence hurts. It hurts in a quiet, but intense way. As all truly important things do.
For over fifty years, we shared with Pedro a life made of unrepeatable moments. Shared laughter, dreamed up projects, silences filled with deep understanding. Lives intertwined by the privilege of his presence.
Today, as we say goodbye, we are not overcome solely by sadness, but also by the certainty of having witnessed a full, vibrant and beautiful life. A life that does not end with death, because the essence of who he was, his example, his way of being, his way of looking at the world, endures.
Pedro remains with us, in memory, in the values he embodied, in the way he taught us, by example, to live with dignity, generosity and authenticity.
Today, we say farewell with love, on behalf of all who knew him, admired him and loved him. Of all who were touched by his sincere friendship, his loyalty and his affection.
Thank you, Pedro. Thank you for your tireless work ethic, for teaching us that perseverance and passion are the roots of true success. Thank you for your clear and courageous vision, for knowing how to look beyond obstacles and transform challenges into opportunities.
Thank you for always being present in the important moments, accompanying, supporting and celebrating every step. For your silent but constant love, felt in the embrace, the smile and the little things that are never forgotten.
Thank you for your bravery in facing life with dignity and for teaching us to do the same, even in difficult times. Thank you for your faithfulness to your principles and for being an example of integrity to all of us who admired you.
Thank you for your presence in so many memories, celebrations, gatherings, trips, long conversations and peaceful afternoons. For being there in the big moments -but also in the small ones- that, in the end, weigh heaviest on the heart.
Thank you for your wise advice that still echoes in my mind, guiding me through difficult decisions. Thank you for teaching me the value of constant effort, humility in success and dignity in adversity. For making your professional life a path of service, where success was not a selfish destination but an opportunity to open doors for others.
Thank you for having influenced so many lives with your fair decisions, timely words, and your humble leadership. For making respect a habit and generosity a way of life. Thank you for showing that work can also be an act of love and that building something great is meaningless if it is not done with enthusiasm and purpose.
You leave us not only a story of success but a life example. A reminder that greatness is not about being unreachable, but about being able to inspire others with love, presence, empathy, and humility.
Thank you for staying with us, not in the body, but in the mark you left, not in time, but in memory. Thank you for remaining forever in the deepest part of those of us who loved you.
Your presence was, and always will be, a gift in my life.
May the light of your spirit guide us from afar and shine eternally.
Francisco Massó Mora.
